Portable Appliance Testing

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to
ensure that they are safe to use. The testing is carried out to any equipment which has an electric
plug and is connected to the building electrical wiring system, from small to large items and those
that are transportable or stationary, all items must be tested. Most electrical safety defects can be
found by visual examination, but some types of defects can only be found by testing.

How?

Regular checks of equipment can help reduce incidents within the workplace, maintaining a safe
working environment for all. Before electrically testing an appliance, a visual inspection will be
carried out to confirm that the item is safe and fit for purpose, checking suitability of use, switching,
wiring, connections, plug conditions, etc. (Note: this is a functional test not to be confused with
standard user checks that are regularly carried out). The appliance will then be tested to verify earth
continuity and insulation resistance. Where an appliance fails (and if, after the plug, fuse and flex
has been re-examined or exchanged, the retest still records a fail). If the appliance fails, then the
appliance will be isolated, plug top removed and the appliance labelled ‘Do Not Use’.

The client is informed of failed items which could be potentially dangerous, and a certificate will be
distributed to this effect, signed by the engineer and the client representative. Those items that fail
the test should be repaired or a new one should be purchased by the client.

We open the electrical plug and check/tighten the live, neutral and earth cables and check that
the cable grip is securing the mains cable. Within this service, we also check if the fuse is the
correct size for the item it is connected to.
